Dance On The Brain!

Updated: Sep 4

The benefits of dance extend far beyond the studio, offering a thrilling journey into the brain's remarkable development:

Dance Stretches Growing Minds

We all know dancers are flexible, but it's not just their bodies that bend—it's their brains too!

Neuroplasticity, as defined by Psychology Today, refers to the brain's amazing ability to adapt, change, and grow over time by forming new neurons and building fresh networks. Just like their physical bodies, children's brains evolve in leaps and bounds, crafting new neural pathways as they encounter experiences and overcome challenges.

Dancing is one of the most exhilarating ways to develop this extraordinary skill.

According to Harvard Medical School, dance “stimulates the brain’s ability to change, adapt, and form new neural connections, leading to enhanced cognitive functions like memory, spatial awareness, and problem-solving.” How does it achieve this feat? By weaving together complex physical movements, rhythms, choreography, and synchronization with classmates, students sharpen their executive functioning, long-term memory, and spatial awareness. The esteemed institute suggests that these benefits may extend into adulthood, potentially lowering the risk of dementia. Now that's something to dance about!

Dance and music also unleash an extraordinary human ability: interpersonal neural synchrony, or interbrain synchrony. This fascinating phenomenon occurs when the brain activity of two or more individuals synchronize. It’s this magical synchronization that allows large dance ensembles, choirs, bands, and orchestras to perform in perfectly in sync with one another. When children dance, they don’t just move to the rhythm—they cultivate social connections, shared focus, and cooperative skills. These are the very skills that pave the way for career success and the foundation of thriving relationships.

At BDSOPA, your child strengthens and stretches their “brain muscles” during class. Our sessions strike a balance between nurturing and challenging, providing a safe space for dancers to grow and ignite their creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. So, the next time you watch your child practicing an 8-count or working on their splits, remember they're also nurturing vital neural flexibility that will support them throughout their lives.
